Factors that cause traffic jam in Phnom Penh

The growth in the population of people now use their own vehicles is the main factor which caused the traffic jam in Phnom Penh city happens every day. Many people can afford to buy cars and motorbikes. At the same time of economic growth and also growth technology of  such as mobile phones, computers, cameras, and a lot of more that we cannot know about it, but if we turn to vehicles, There are many kind of vehicles which were produced to pleasure people`s mind. Moreover, vehicles such as motorbikes and cars are more fashionable that can make people want use it, because they look nice and it creates with high technologies. One more thing, Cambodia is democracy country so the power is on the people, and people have right to do what they want to do. It is up to them, but it is controlled by the law. Thus, all the reasons above people have chance to do their own business or do their careers to get income to support their family or their life which mean that they can afford to buy cars or motorbikes. Moreover, Cambodia is a developing country that does not have public transportation yet. People use their own vehicles for travelling. It is also the reason of increasing vehicles in the city. Therefore, Phnom Penh increases the number of vehicles very fast and the increasing of vehicles on the street is an ingredient to the traffic jam crisis. However the increasing of vehicles is not the only factor that caused traffic jam. Road condition is also the factor that caused traffic jam in Phnom Penh. Although the past few year, we have seen the improvement, but it is not fast enough to cope with the increasing number of vehicles on the streets. Most of the streets are small. Furthermore, during rainy season clumsy road and flooded are the main reasons that people try to avoid these road, thus creating traffic jam at the bigger streets. Sometimes, the traffic jam happens when the cars and trucks park on walk-side. Often we see many cars park on the road when they have party or wedding in front of restaurants, and shops. So the street becomes smaller than normal. In addition, the big truck or container mostly park on the street for take-out of the goods or for their business. The parking of trucks or containers on the street also caused the traffic jam, because container is very big and long so when they turn it to another way. It takes time two or three minutes. Moreover, we usually see traffic Jam happen behind that truck or container. The unreliability and the shortage of traffic lights is also the factor contributed to cause the traffic jam in the city. In Phnom Penh traffic light is tool to control the flow of traffic or make traffic process smoothly.  We can see a lot of traffic light on the intersection. We can see them along the roads, and the road that are complex. Even though, nowadays some part of Phnom Penh seems to have enough traffic lights to process the traffic smoothly, but often we see the lights are not working. Sometimes, the light itself is not working, and sometimes, it is because of the power cut. In the bad possible condition, the light went out during the rush hour creating chaos on the junctions.  In some places, the setting of the traffic light is not righty as the streets, so the traffic in that place is difficult to control and it usually makes trouble or sometimes, it causes the traffic jam. On the other hand, traffic  jam usually  happen  where there  is  a  small  road  build  across  the  main  street  and there is not traffic light in that place.  Moreover, the traffic jam always occurs on the intersection road. Most drivers in Phnom Penh are not responsible for their duty. If we talk about the  irresponsibility of drivers in Phnom Penh today, we often see people park their car in the worse possible position creating the traffic jam b, though the car owner  never care about the fact that he or she created traffic jam. There are even motorbikes that drive at the wrong side of the road even if they see the street partition clearly. The worse thing is they think that it is the right to do so. We see people who wanted to turn, they just turn no matter if they can turn or not. In the same way, everyone tries to go first all the time and they do not understand each other. Especially, when the traffic light was cute, people just want to go first all the time. They never care about the other. Therefore, when traffic is happen at that time, it takes long time that the other.Traffic law and the police is also one of the contributing factors. The major of Cambodian people are not interesting in learning traffic law, and they have behind the law because they do not know the advantages of traffic law. Moreover, most of the drivers don’t have driver licenses and they can drive their vehicles on the roads, but have not got techniques in driving, also have not understand the traffic signs and traffic laws that the reason lead them do not obey the traffic law, and the law itself is not enforced. Most of the time police are powerless to enforce the law. Police can only stop an old man who rides old motorbike, but not gentlemen who drives luxury car. Moreover, what is perhaps wrong in Cambodia today is that the police are trying to fine drivers who has no helmets, whose motorbike has no flash mirrors more than trying to fine licenses. Helmet and mirrors cannot help ease traffic condition in Phnom Penh. They can only help saving life of individual. In addition, there is no sense in traffic law. If the law were enforced, we would not see motorbikes and car crossing the red light or drive on the wrong side of the road. So Irresponsible and polices is also reasons for traffic jam in the city. The problem of traffic jam can be solved by providing public transportation, changing our habits of driving, making strict traffic law and it is necessary to encourage people obey the traffic laws which will make greatly change the problem of traffic jam. Finally, public transportation is the easiest way to solve those problems. If there is comfortable and cheap transportation such as buses and trains, people will choose to use it rather than driving. In fact, governments should provide good public transportation and charge prices that are affordable for everyone. The government also should encourage people to use public transport or vehicles with small size such as bicycles or make tax on private vehicles. For instance, when the number of people understand and accept taking public transport as their main means of transport, traffic jam will not happen constantly on the roads.
